NBC Youth Sculler Takes National Bronze Medal June 15, 2014

Sacramento, CA/June 15: Emily Kallfelz, who rows for the Narragansett Boat Club in Providence finished third to win a bronze medal in the Grand Final of the USRowing Youth National Championship Women’s Single Sculls. Kallfelz will be entering her senior year at St. George’s School in Newport (RI).

Kallfelz took her first strokes November, 2012 on the family’s rowing machine. She liked and continued to row regularly. She also had a chance to do a little bit of on the water rowing at a camp in Florida. She then began doing time trials and entered the CRASH-B Sprints in Boston where she finished with a time of 7:09 over 2000 meters, placing 8th out of 239 well-trained high school girls, which showed has significant promise to become a fast rower. This prompted her parents, both former Cornell University rowers, to ask Peter Wilhelm to coach her.

Over the past six years Wilhelm has coached a number of Narragansett Boat Club high school scullers who became national champions. So Emily started rowing at the Boat Club in Providence with Wilhelm as her coach. With only 20 practices on the water behind her, she won the girls’ singles at the Northeast District Championships held in Lowell, MA in May. This qualified her for a berth in the Youth National Championships held on Lake Natoma outside of Sacramento, CA. To qualify for the grand final, Emily had to row in a 2000 meter preliminary heat on Friday, a 2000 meter repechage heat on Saturday, which she won easily. All of these races were rowed in temperatures exceeding 90 degrees.

In today’s Grand Final the competition was definitely in lanes one and two, since they were the winners of the first day preliminary heats who moved directly to the final. Y Quad Cities’ Sharis from Moline, Iowa and Seattle’s Framson were the leaders throughout the race. Kallfelz had a terrible start which left her behind in 6th place, but she resolutely pushed on to come within a half second of the silver medalist.

For Emily Kallfelz, who has just started her competitive career in rowing, this bronze medal is a major achievement. Her summer of rowing has only begun. She has been invited to attend the national junior sculling camp which may take her to the world championships to be held this year in Hamburg, Germany.
