Flat Water Makes Konquering the 'Konk a Breeze October 24, 2013
Providence/October 23: The highlights of the 5th Konquer the ‘Konk were the close finishes for the top three boats: Jon Dow (18:17); Toby Satterthwaite and Tom Basso (18:21); Harrison Hopfenberg and Theo Golstein (18:24), who made it a tight battle for first place honors. Among the girls events the top-flight tandem of Grace Ryan and Laura Rand (18:49) took top honors with the NBC Scholastic Four (Abby Prescott, Caroline Hamann, Annie Hutchings, Rachel Balcom, and Hannah Fitts) finishing six seconds behind. Bay View’s top boat, the Bay View JV/Novice Eight, finished 12 seconds behind the NBC Four. Georgia Jones took top honors in the zephyrs with a time of 25.43. The rest of the times and boats are noted below.
Altogether forty eight youth scullers and rowers assembled at the Pawtucket Pier to do their final test of speed from “Stone to Stone” on the Seekonk, which brought them to the finish line at the Waterman Grille for a distance of a little less than three miles. The starting order was slower boats first progressing to the speedsters at the very end. The test is one of navigation, avoiding each other as well as the buoys, plus pushing yourself personally to get the best time possible. The conditions were the best ever with cool temps and flat water and an almost a slack low tide.
Many thanks to our NBC Scholastic coaches: Lisa Evans, Joan Brush, Amy Abbot, Fran O’Donnell, Brent Basso, and Jack Ryan for leading our young rowers and scullers throughout this fall rowing season. Thank you, too, to Francesca Dow, Robin Gross, Rick Richards, Kristin San Bento, Pete Evans, Ann F. and KT who volunteered to make this regatta a success. A special thanks to Lisa Evans, who has done a marvelous job throughout the fall organizing the program, setting the lineups for regattas, and organizing the trips for NBC Scholastic. It has been a great fall. Let be a major building block for an even better spring season!
