NBC Scullers Qualify for USRowing Youth Nationals May 19, 2013

Youth Nationals 2013 May 19, 2013 - Lowell, MA: Racing over the 2000 meter Merrimac River course at the USRowing Northeast Junior Championship, six Rhode Island scullers qualified for more competition in the upcoming USRowing Youth Nationals in June. Leading the pack of Narragansett Boat Club scullers was Chase Buchholz, a graduating senior from Moses Brown School, who powered his way to win the Men’s Youth Single Final with a two lengths lead. About ninety minutes later, Buchholz stroked the Narragansett Boat Club’s Youth Quadruple Sculls who took first place by a half-length.  The other members of the crew are Isaac Mocarski, a Moses Brown junior, in the three seat behind Buchholz; Jonathan Dow, a junior at Mt. St. Charles Academy, at two; and at bow Eric Esposito, a graduating senior at Wheeler School. For Buchholz, Mocarski, and Esposito this is a return engagement of sorts. Along with Breck Wagner, they were the winning 2012 Junior Quad at the Club Nationals.

Rand and Ryan 2x Rounding out the competition was the hard-fought third place finish of Laura Rand, stroke, and Grace Ryan, bow, in the Women’s Youth Double Sculls. They won their qualifying rights with a one tenth of second faster time than the fourth place crew. Both are high school juniors, Rand at Barrington High School and Ryan at Lincoln School in Providence.

All six scullers are coached by Peter Wilhelm, long-time resident of Barrington and sculler/coach at the Narragansett Boat Club in Providence. Wilhelm has coached numerous national champions, including the 2012 National Jr. Men’s Double Scull (Buchholz and Wagner), who placed 8th in the 2012 FISA World Junior Championships held in Plovdiv, Bulgaria. Wilhelm was named the 2012 Northeast Junior Sculling Coach of the Year. In the fall, Buchholz will be at Harvard and Esposito at Yale.

In addition to continuing their training on the Seekonk River, the next stop for these scullers is the 2013 USRowing Youth National Championships to be held June 7-9, 2013, in Oak Ridge, Tennessee.

Below are the results of the Finals. There were preliminary heats as well. All of this can be accessed at www.RegattaCentral.com.
