WEST WINDSOR, N.J. – Four crews earned berths on the U.S. Junior National Team at the conclusion of junior trials Tuesday at Mercer Lake in West Windsor, N.J. The selected crews earned the right to represent the United States at the 2011 World Rowing Junior Championships August 4-7 in Eton, Great Britain.
In the men’s double sculls, Graham Anderson and Charlie Campbell of Maritime Rowing Club/Saugatuck Rowing Club (pictured to the right) swept the best two-out-of-three finals. In the first race, Anderson and Campbell took a comfortable lead early on and held it, finishing in a 7:05.12 to defeat Narragansett’s Chase Buchholz and Richard Wagner, who crossed the line in 7:09.02. Both are coached by Peter Wilhelm.
In the second final, Anderson and Campbell crossed the line in a 6:52.10, with Buchholz and Wagner second in a 6:57.24. GMS Rowing Center’s Greg Burke and Sam Rouse finished in third place, crossing the line in 7:02.82.
“We got off to a quick start,” said Campbell, of the second race. “We had open water at about 200 meters, kept it the whole way and just stuck to our race plan.”
“We definitely had a better middle thousand in the second race,” said Anderson. “(Buchholz and Wagner) walked up a little bit on us during the last 500 (meters), but we did what we had to do. The GMS double just beat us at Nationals, so we 100 percent had to beat them here to get some glory back, in a sense.
Breck and Chase are coached by Peter Wilhelm. Since they are a "young" double, they will have an opportunity to come back again next year.
“It’s pretty cool (to be going to Eton). I was in the quad last year, so I’m a little bit more excited about this boat. It will fun and I’m looking forward to it.”
