NBC Scullers Finish 2nd & 3rd in Singles and 3rd in the Doubles in New Jersey

West Windsor, NJ/April 22-23: Racing in one of the first really big regattas of the spring, Brigid Kennedy (8:21.0) and Katie Dolan (8:37.8) took silver and bronze respectively in Women’s Varsity Singles at the 2000m Mercer Lake/ISA Sculling Championships. New Canaan Crew’s Claire Campbell took first with a time of 8:14.2. There were fifteen scullers in the event; three heats of up to six each with the top two finishers qualifying for the final. Brigid and Katie won their heats. Later on Sunday, Brigid and Katie took the bronze in the Women’s Varsity Double Sculls with a time of 7:58.5. The top two finishers were South Jersey Rowing Club, 1st with a time of 7:41.0 and GMS Rowing, 7:48. Altogether there were eighteen doubles in the competition.

The NBC Men’s Varsity Quad (S-Cam Benavent; 3-Charlie Markert; 2-Max Eleftherio; B-Jonathan Greenberg) also made it’s springtime debut by winning the Petite Final with a time of 6:37.5. There were eighteen crews in the event. The NBC Quad placed third in their heat, having suffered a boat-stopping crab at their heat. Also, rowing in their first race were Emily Dolan and Lexi DeShaw, who placed third in their flight of the Women’s Varsity Lightweight Double.

Congratulations to our scullers and to their coaches Peter Wilhelm (Brigid, Katie, and the Quad) and Joan Brush (for Emily and Lexi). The complete results are attached to this report as a PDF. These crews will now advance to an even larger regatta this coming weekend at the Saratoga (NY) Invitational.

Lincoln School’s Crew Takes Top Three Girls’ Races of their Invitational Regatta

Providence/April 22: It was the third year of the Lincoln Invitational and the hosting crew took the top three events easily outdistancing their competition. There was an excellent battle for second place in the First Fours with the girls from NBC Scholastic narrowly outpacing the East Bay (Barrington) crew by .4 of a second. East Bay was the winner of the Girls’ Fourth Fours as well as the easy winner of both Boys’ Fours races. Congratulations to the coaches: Dan Gorriaran (Lincoln), Amy Abbot and Lisa Evan (NBC Scholastic), and Deb Sullivan (East Bay). The races were rowed over the 1500meter NBC Course with a quartering tailwind against an incoming tide that increased as the races progressed. This produced choppy conditions, particularly for the first and second boats of the boys and the girls.

Here are the results: Girls’ First Fours-1st Lincoln, 6:12.0; 2nd NBC Scholastic, 6:24.5; 3rd East Bay, 6:24.9; 4th Vermont Academy, 5th 6:31.8; Marianapolis, 6:47.4; 6th Thayer, 7:06.5. Girls’ Second Fours-1st Lincoln, 6:16.0; 2nd NBC Scholastic, 6:37.9; 3rd East Bay, 6:42.8; 4th Thayer, 7:07.7. Girls’ Third Fours-1st Lincoln, 6:48.0; 2nd East Bay, 7:01.5; 3rd NBC Scholastic, 7:33.4. Girls’ Fourth Fours-1st East Bay, 7:09.0; 2nd Lincoln, 7:45.4. Boys’ First Fours-1st East Bay, 5:46.0; 2nd Marianapolis, 6:04.6; 3rd Thayer, 6:10.8. Boys’ Second Fours-1st East Bay, 6:18.5; 2nd Thayer, 6:32.0; 3rd Marianapolis, 6:48.5.

Bay View Varsity Takes Two Wins

Shrewsbury, MA/April 20: The Bay View Crews raced over the 1500m course on Lake Quinsigamond. Here are the times: First Varsity-1st Bay View, 5:24.2; 2nd Shrewsbury, 5:28.7. Second Varsity-1st Shrewsbury, 5:44.2; Bay View, 5:50.3. Third Varsity-1st Shrewsbury, 6:00.5; 2nd Bay View, 6:20.4. Were it not for a boat-stopping crab, the 3V would have been much closer to Shrewsbury.

Providence/April 23: Rowing in the Seekonk in its typically virulent form, Bay View and Convent of the Sacred Heart (CT) pressed on over the 1500m course against a headwind and incoming tide that increased with severity as races progressed. First Varsity times-1st Bay View, 6:46; 2nd Sacred Heart, 6:53. Second Varsity-1st Sacred Heart, 6:41; 2nd Bay View, 6:50. Third Varsity-1st Bay View, 7:13; 2nd Sacred Heart, 7:49.

Congratulations to the Bay View Bengals, Brent Basso (Head Coach), and Jennifer Contreras (Assistant).
