Brigid Kennedy Takes First in Belgian 5K Head Race February 27, 2017
Brugge, Belgium/February 26: Brigid Kennedy continued her “Have Oars Will Travel” Odyssey through Europe with another win in at a long distance regatta, this time racing on a Belgian canal in the 5K Brugge Boat Race. Brigid took first place in the Junior Women’s Single Event with a time of 22:54.11, a little more than 1:40 ahead of the second place sculler, Frieda De Clerck Manon, one of the members of the host club, K.R.Brugge. Accompanying Brigid was her proud dad, Bob Kennedy.
Brigid rowed in a 34-year old Empacher single appropriately named “Pieter De Conick.” This single was a bit tipper than her flyweight here at home, but obviously that was not a problem. Bob wrote the following: “The canal has a slight current as the water flows north to toward the North Sea at Ostende, which is only 15K away through a set of locks. The rowed against the current. The temperature was mostly 48-50 degrees with 5-7 mph cross tail wind with a few typical Flemish sprinkles thrown in.” There was also a very low bridge in the approach to the warmup area and start, which required a super long laybacked glide.
This was a great month for Brigid: officially acclaimed as NBC’s all-time mileage champion for one year of almost constant rowing and setting a new World Record 10K Record for 17-18 year old women. She is a senior at Moses Brown School and the family are very active NBC members. Congratulations to all!
