NBC Scores Big at Head of the Fish Regatta November 2, 2015

Saratoga Springs, NY/October 31-November 1: The Head of the Fish Regatta is a full invasion of the Saratoga NY area by all rowing types from the Northeast and Canada. It’s a great amalgam of those who not only love rowing, but enjoy the challenge of doing so in cooler temperatures and expected precipitation of all sorts. Below are the NBC results as gleaned from HOF website and Streamline Rowing. Thanks to Carol Browning, Daniela Roop, Lisa Evans, Marianne Kennedy, and Eric Watne for helping to get out the word back to us in Rhode Island.

Among the faithful to this pilgrimage to Fish Creek were many NBC scullers. Not as many as some sweeps programs, but since so many NBC’ers rowed in more than one race, our tiny Boat Club ranked 3rd or 4th in terms of total 2100+ entries. Note below that some names keeping popping up throughout both days. Somehow going over that 2-mile course gets better if you do it more than once each day. This year the weather helped as well, since it was balmy and not too windy.

Congratulations to all of the competitive and logistical efforts of our NBC members! Congratulations especially to our winners in the Men’s Master 8+, Women’s Master 8+, Brigid Kennedy, Andy Washburn and Anne Fleet, Joan Brush, Eliza Kallfelz, and many others who placed 2nd, 3rd, and other single digits. Kudos, too, to our coaches who are sources of inspiration: Dan, Peter, Lisa, and Andrew Kallfelz. For those of you who would like to see the complete results of the regatta, Google Head of the Fish Regatta.

This account from Carol Browning captures a good deal of the excitement that comes from rowing all year and doing very well at this event: “I can only tell you it was one hell of a time with so much fun and so proud to be an NBC member! It was a dog fight in the Women’s Master Eights. We started first and were chased by Upper Valley all the way. We had to beat them because they had bigger handicap and we did in raw time by 10 secs! Which cleared us by 4 secs for handicap! The team had no time to warm up but that didn't stop us from continuing to focus on what had to be done. The stroke pair led the way with each pair doing their job to provide the backup needed to make it happen. The team presented fish head to Carol who was thrilled and honored to receive it and to be part of the great team! Later in in the day, the 2nd place silver on women's quad with Anne rowed in Peter Wilhelm’s fabulous WinTech quad. We had keep pulling ahead in a thick pack of competitors so that we passed about 5 boats to give us a strong finish for second place and winning a silver. The key was for the crew not to get distracted by all the yelling from other crews as we came up on them. This lineup stayed strong and quick starting from the stern knowing they had 24 boats to compete against. Success rang for them with a silver!!”

Carol wasn’t done yet, she still had the women’s master lightweight double to row with Ruth Berenson. They started last in their pact and knew it was all about focus and pulling. Ruth kept it a steady strong stroke rating of 27-28 throughout the body of the course. At the 500 meter mark Carol yelled "LET's BRING IT UP". Ruth brought it up to a 30 with strength. “We went after it like only two women in their 60s can do with such determination!,” says Carol. “It was an awesome race. We finished with a 31 appearing on the stroke coach!! We knew when we crossed that finish line we had a great race and left nothing behind. It was almost emotional and we had no idea of our placement, only that we rowed our best and hardest. What a success and Ruth, who will be 68 this month, rocks!!!”

To say the least, Carol and Ruth had an exuberant third place finish. Once again, as you review the list below many rowers raced 2-4 times overall. For those of you who would like to see the complete results of the regatta, Google Head of the Fish Regatta.
