Georgia and Hannah Win National Scholastic Doubles June 8, 2015
June 7/Fairfax Station, VA: Lincoln School’s Georgia Jones and Hannah Fitts won the Women’s Double Sculls Event by 4-5 lengths. With Jones at stroke and Fitts at bow, they zipped off the line at 40 strokes a minute, had open water after 300 meters, settled to a base stroke of 34-36, and then extended their lead as they powered through their last 500 meters. The official name of the regatta was the National Schools' Championship Regatta. Sponsored by the National Scholastic Rowing Association, this was a all-day event held on the 1500 meter Occoquan River course. It included eights, fours, pairs, doubles, and singles for boys, girls, and even middle school rowers/scullers primarily from the mid-Atlantic states. The girls are also members of the Narragansett Boat Club.
Hannah reported that “It was a really fun race. Strong tailwind, [but] the water was really nice.” Lincoln School’s Head Coach Dave Mercante and Assistant Coach Duncan Stiller coached the girls as they rowed on the Seekonk River before and after school. Both girls started rowing at Lincoln School just over three years ago. Last fall they were the double scull winners at the NE Junior and High School Championships (Worcester, MA).
