Brigid Kennedy Takes First Place at the Italian Sculling Challenge March 8, 2015

Lake Orta, Italy/March 8: Have oars will travel is Brigid Kennedy’s motto. Over the past six months she has successfully won an event in Washington, D.C, and two in Sarasota, Florida. Now, while on her school vacation, she took first place in the Junior Women’s Event at the Italian Sculling Challenge on this beautiful lake in the foothills of the Alps northeast of Milan. It was a beautiful, cool, calm day for this tenth edition of the 6000 meter Italian Sculling Challenge which includes a turnaround buoy at the 3000 meter mark. Kennedy’s time was 28’ 11.6”. Her closest competitor was Camilla Musetti of the nearby Pallanza rowing club who finished second in 29’ 55.0”. In addition to winning her event, Kennedy placed 42nd overall among all the 84 single scullers from many different age categories and, according to race organizers, representing from three continents.

Brigid, a sophomore at Moses Brown School and an East Greenwich resident, started rowing just two years ago as a member of the Narragansett Boat Club’s scholastic rowing program. Since then she has taken on rowing as her main sport by further developing her technique and training under the guidance of her coach Peter Wilhelm. Brigid also placed 7th in the Women’s Youth Doubles of the 2014 Head of the Charles Regatta.

After the regatta, Brigid gave the President of the Italian Rowing Federation, Giuseppe Abbaganale, an NBC racing shirt. She also stood on top of the medals podium to accept her awards.

Here are the official results from the Canottieri Lago D’Orta:
