NBC 2014 Awards go to Bjorn, Corlis, Isaac, Dave, Daniela, and Amy February 15, 2015

January 30/Providence: The January Awards dinner is a wonderful way to reflect on the year that has past and to recognize those who did very well. Chris Bardt, Boat Club President and MC for the evening emphasized the role the Narragansett Boat Club plays as a member of the larger Providence community. He also announced that 2014 was a major year for fundraising since various members and friends of the Boat Club raised $56,000 that was sorely needed to move the fence closer to the road and fill in the space between the fence and the boathouse with a pressure-treated deck. These funds were also critical in replacing several of the north pilings that support the boathouse. Chris also announced that thanks to substantial funding raised by the parents and friends of the Bay View Crew, the NBC will be purchasing a new Vespoli midweight eight. Toward that purchase price the Boat Club will also contribute $10,000. The Boat Club has already received $3,000 toward this fund; we now need to raise the remainder over the next two months. [All persons who wish to contribute send their tax deductible gift to Bjorn Sandstede, NBC Treasurer, P.O. Box 603011, Providence, RI 02906-0011. Please make your checks payable to the Narragansett Boat Club.]

Chris then presented the 2014 awards. For the Women’s Sweeps the Maggie Chadwick Award winner was Daniela Roop. Selected by her fellow rowers, Daniella fulfills the description of her “ability to contribute to her team's general enjoyment of rowing, consolidate and inspire her team's effort in competition, her own individual effort and improvement, and her overall endeavor to strengthen her boat's teamwork.” Daniella rowed four years at Brown, was the Captain her senior year in 1993, was a coach at Brown for four years as well as Bay View for the past three years. Throughout these years she has been doing recreational rowing to maintain good health, but this year she upped her regular training in both sculling and sweeps.

The C.P. Williamson Sculling Award was next. This award is presented to the sculler who has successfully competed at the Head of the Charles and whose good sportsmanship embodies the spirit of C. P. Williamson, a key NBC member who helped keep it going through the Fifties and Sixties. Surveying the vast field of sculling entries, the Board of Governors selected Dave Mercante. Dave took up rowing when he was a student at Notre Dame. He then moved to Providence to gain his Masters in Teaching at Brown. Soon after that he started teaching English and coaching at Lincoln School. He is now the Head Coach of the crew program. Dave has been a regular NBC competitor over the past ten years.

Next up was the Albin Moser Award established to recognize that member who has gone far and above the call of duty in his/her work for the Boat Club. The Board of Governors considered many worthy potential recipients, but this year Bjorn Sandstede stood out. He has been always at the ready to assist for many of the tasks that have come up during the course of the year. In particular, he has ably stepped into the role of NBC Treasurer, succeeding our Treasurer Emeritus Garret Palm who has returned to New Hampshire.

Next it was on to the Championship Sculling Trophies. These two awards go to the fastest NBC scullers as determined by their performance in the Men’s and Women’s Open Singles events, but in 2014 we did not have enough entries for the Mayor’s Cup Open Singles. So, the results of the Sweeps & Scullers Open Events determined the fastest man and woman for the NBC. For the second year in a row, Corlis Gross took the women’s honors as the top NBC female sculler with her victory in the Women’s Open. Corlis continues the skein of Gross victories in the event, since her mother, Robin, won the award in 1986 and 1994-1996. Will 2015 be a three-peat?

In the Men’s Championship Singles, the award would go to the fastest NBC sculler in the Sweeps & Sculls Men’s Open. For this event there were three heats of men with the top two in each heat advancing to the six-boat final. Isaac Mocarski’s size and power propelled him into a very tight race with a sculler from the Osprey Rowing Club, who was the eventual winner of the race. Isaac was two lengths behind, but he was the fastest NBC sculler ahead of Jack Luby and Toby Satterthwaite. Isaac was a member of Peter Wilhelm’s 2013 National Championship Quad and the stroke of the winning 2013 Head of the Charles Junior Championship Double. Isaac is now rowing at the University of Washington in Seattle so Peter accepted his award.

Finally, it was time for the mileage awards. Overall, the Boat Club’s mileage total of 86,738 miles, eclipsing 2012’s previous all-time record of 80,050. Top three honors for the men went to the 2013 winner, Bjorn Sandstede (2,071.7), Andy Washburn (1865.8), and Kit Wise (1,540.50). For the women, the top three medalists were Amy Abbot (1,884.0), Sharon Cutts (1,701.1), and Anne Fleet (1,571.3). All of these numbers were tabulated through the electronic wizardry of Dan Gorriaran, and of course, authenticated by Price Waterhouse Accountants. Back in the “olden days,” Barbara and Dick Green painstakingly made all of the tabulations manually. The list of the top sixteen scullers/rowers for men and women follows this narrative. Speaking of the olden days, the top mileage for an individual is still Richard Lownes’ 2,550+. Notably, the list below includes Peter McKendall, Toby Satterthwaite, and Brigid Kennedy who are three youth scullers.

Many thanks once again to Ira Garber for opening up his beautiful studio for all of us; to Kim Worrell who successfully broadcast and organized this annual gathering; Dan Gorriaran and Hookfast, Inc. who provided the plaques and medals for the winners; all of us who provided a tremendous amount of food; and Mother Nature for giving us a small break from this array of winter storms. Now it is on to Springtime…maybe it will stop snowing by then.
