NBC Takes First in Six Events at the Fish October 28, 2014

Saratoga Springs, NY/October 25-26: As their reward for first place, each winning boat won a fish head plaque, the awards to the top boats at the Head of the Fish Regatta. This is the annual gathering of thousands of rowers, scullers, and coxswains from the Northeast and Canada. All of these athletes come to race of on a course that is slightly less than two miles long. To top it off, the weather is usually more like early winter than late fall. This was good year since it was more like late fall.

Similar to the Head of the Charles, the Narragansett Boat Club had many more than its usual crowd of competitors. To start things off the winning on Saturday, the first fish head went to the Free Radical Rowing Club in the Men’s Master Eights. These men have motto that reads “Show Up, Shut Up, and Row.” In fact, they do not practice together and only show up at certain events. Among this group are a number of our erudite NBC Masters, Dan Gorriaran and Andy Washburn, among others. The top boat was Dan’s this year, winning in 10:55.68, by the slimmest of margins over Andy’s boat.

The next race was the Women’s Master Eights, comprised of another boatload of rowers similar to the men, since they had not rowed together as an eight except for this race at this regatta. Their victory left nothing to chance, since they won their event with a time of 13:15.14, slightly more than 9 seconds ahead of second place Maritime Rowing. Congratulations to Carol Browning, Gayle Simmons, Lisa Evans, Kyna Leski, Sharon Cutts, Kim Worrell, Zoe Gentes, Annie Madeiros.

From there on the victories belonged to Peter Wilhelm’s scullers. Artym Hayda showed that he ranks among the class of Northeast with his win in the Men’s Junior A Singles with a time of 13:10.52. In second place was a sculler from Boston’s Community Rowing, six seconds behind. Not too long afterward, Jack Luby ,powered his way to first place in the Men’s Junior B Singles, winning by a little more than 11 seconds ahead of second place, the top sculler from GMS in Connecticut. Jack’s time was 13:31.44. On Sunday Jack and Artym went on to place second in the Men’s Junior Doubles with a time of 12:26.55, less than one second behind the winner from Cascadilla. Two races was not enough for Jack, who combined with Emily Kallfelz to win the Junior Mixed Doubles with a time of 12:23.01, 31.5 seconds ahead of Toby Satterthwaite and Eliza Kallfelz, who were about 15 seconds ahead of third place Brigid Kennedy and Harrison Snow. With the three of them taking the top rankings together, they completed an NBC first in terms of dominating an event.

Last but not least, especially since they raced in the Junior Women’s Doubles on Saturday, Emily and Eliza Kallfelz finished their race in 12:59.21 as they outdistanced the second-place Ottawa, Canada crew by over 25 seconds. This is quite remarkable since they have been doing most of their training on ergometers. We are certain that their parents will proudly display the Kallfelz family fish head somewhere on their living room walls.

Going beyond the first place finishers the NBC had more than its share of medal winners in the top three spots: Chris Bardt, 2nd in the Mixed Master Singles (50-59); David Gray 3rd in the same event; Anne Fleet 2nd in the Women’s Master Singles (50-59); Joan Brush, Alden Bumstead, Anne Fleet, Kim Worrell took 2nd in the Women’s Open Quads; Dan Gorriaran, Scott Roop, Andy Washburn, Charles Hamlin came in second in the Men’s Master Quads; Carol Browning, Joan Richards, Sharon Cutts, Kyna Leski placed 3rd in the Women’s Master Quads; Toby Satterthwaite took 3rd in the Men’s Junior B Singles; Chase Penhallurick placed 3rd in the Men’s Junior Frosh/Novice Singles; Scott Roop, Joan Brush, Anne Fleet, Andy Washburn placed 2nd in the Mixed Master Quads; Kim Worrell, Alden Bumstead, Eric Watne, John Cotter placed 3rd in the same event; 15 year old Brigid Kennedy placed 2nd in the Women’s Junior B Singles; Harrison Hopfenberg and Theo Golstein who placed 3rd in the Men’s Junior Lightweight Doubles.

And finally, many thanks to Gayle Simmons and Pete Evans who drove the trailer. It’s always a major achievement not just to race, but to return with all of the equipment intact and safe back in the boathouse.

Below is the complete list of competitors, at least as of this writing. If you would like more information, Google Head of the Fish Regatta and click on the links within their website.
