Dan Gorriaran Wins Two; Tracy Glover and Emily Kallfelz Take One; Emily Sets New Course Record October 20, 2014

Cambridge, MA/October 18-19: It was once only New England’s rowing fall festival and it now has become the world’s. The Head of the Charles Regatta is a spectacle in terms of numbers of boats competing, the total number of competitors, and the turnout of the crowds going into hundreds of thousands. This year the expectation was that 400,000 spectators would line the serpentine 3-mile Charles River course. Boston.com estimated that there would be 11,000 athletes, who would row 30-36 strokes per minute, throughout their events totaling over 11 million strokes.

The Narragansett Boat Club helped to celebrate the 50 th Anniversary of this extravaganza with its largest field of entries ever and had excellent results to show for it. At the top of the leader board are Dan Gorriaran and Mike Smith who returned as reigning champions of the Men’s Senior Master Doubles [50+] with a time of 17:24.76, more than 14 seconds faster than second place Union comprising Boston University’s Head Coach, Tom Bohrer and Mike Cataldo. There were 20 doubles in the event. On Sunday Dan and Mike returned on to team up with long-time scullers Dan Johnson and Russ Cone to win the Director’s Challenge Men’s Quadruple Sculls with a first-place time of 17:04.27, 8 seconds ahead of the 2 nd place powerhouse crew from Portland, Maine. There were 36 boats in this event.

Tracy Glover has been an annual standout in women's events, whether it be rowing in sweeps events, or sculling. This year she returned with her sculling partners from other clubs (Annie Boucher, Margarita Zezza, and Carin Reynolds) to continue their racing as the Lucky Charms in the Director's Challenge Women's Quadruple Sculls. They were easily the winners with a time of 18:10.76, slightly more than 23 seconds ahead of second place Blood Street Sculls. There were 30 other boats in this event.

Along with these speedy perennial masters, we have a newcomer to rowing, Emily Kallfelz, who won the Women’s Youth Singles by a whopping 40 seconds and set a new course record. Emily’s time of 21:09.23 easily eclipsed Mary Campbell’s 2013 record of 21:34.827. Just think, she has yet to complete her first year of rowing, since Emily took her first strokes during her December vacation last year. She then started training on indoor rowing machines, did very well at the CRASH-B Sprints (the World Indoor Rowing Championships), joined Peter Wilhelm’s group on a part time basis, made the Junior National Quad, and has continued sculling on a part time basis throughout the fall, paring her water work with lots of ergometer rowing. Clearly Emily has the size, stamina, skill, and aptitude to do even more as she continues her rowing career. Emily was the fastest of 25 other scullers.

Going beyond our first place medalists, other NBC notables were Bill Prichett and Andy Washburn in the Grand Master Doubles [50+] who placed 2 nd of 19; Tracy Glover and Carin Reynolds who came in 3rd of 24 in the Women’s Senior Master Doubles [50+]; Peter McKendall battled through a respiratory issue to place 8th of 34 in the Men’s Youth Singles; Eric Esposito, now rowing at Yale, who placed 4th of 34 in the Men’s Club Singles; Artym Hayda and Jack Luby who placed 4th of 42 in the Men’s Youth Doubles; Jeff Brock and Fred Duling who finished 2 nd of 15 in the Men’s Master Doubles [40+]. Special mention as well goes to Brigid Kennedy and Eliza Kallfelz, who placed 7 th of 33 in the Women’s Youth Doubles, even though most of the time they trained separately, since Eliza goes to St. George’s School in Newport with her sister Emily. In addition, the NBC Junior Women's Youth Four (Hannah Fitts, Rachel Balcom, Anne Hutchings, Maria Iannotti, Annie Madeiros) finished their race in 21:18:74, finishing 36th of 84 boats. This puts them in the top 50% of their event and gives them a guaranteed entry for 2015. This makes them the first NBC youth sweeps boat to gain a guaranteed entry.

As you can see from the list below we had many other scullers and rowers who did very well in this year’s edition of the world’s top fall rowing event. If we have missed anyone, please send a note to www.rownbc.org. In addition, if you wish to get more information about the competition, go to www.hocr.org.
