Emily Kallfelz Strokes Quad to Strong Finish in Junior World B Final August 10, 2014

Hamburg, Germany/August 10: Emily has made a lot of progress in a very short period of time. She got her start by rowing on the erg at home and then took a one-week sculling course at the Florida Rowing Center in December. After returning to Rhode Island, her parents sought out Peter Wilhelm who gave her 20+ lessons on the water before the Northeast Regionals, which she won. This gave her an entry to the Youth Nationals where she placed 3rd and gained an invitation to the National Quad Camp. Through numerous lineup changes the national coaches decided that her size, strength, and fitness would help move the boat at the FISA Junior World Championships in Hamburg. They were correct. Congratulations to Emily, her teammates and national coaches, her family, and to Peter Wilhelm! This is quite the story and an excellent result.

From the USRowing website: "After a disappointing semifinal, the women's quadruple sculls crew of Emily Kallfelz (Jamestown, R.I.), Georgia Gray (Seattle, Wash.), Emily Delleman (Davenport, Iowa) and Haley Zapolski (Davenport, Iowa) came back to win the B final in dominant fashion to finish seventh overall. The crew trailed Italy through the 1,000-meter mark before making a strong push into the top position. The U.S. continued to extend its lead over the final half of the race, finishing more than five seconds ahead of the Italians. The Americans finished with a time of 7:23.49, with Italy crossing in a 7:28.62." You will also note that Emily's crew had the fastest time for this event.
